North retain the Cup after stunning contest

North captain graciously accepts trophy

Lister accepts trophy

At the end of two tough and thrilling days it was a jubilant North team who had managed to tap their deepest reserves to take the match 13 – 11, despite having lagged for long periods of the contest. South came away with a lot of credit though – it was a renewal to rank alongside those close and tense affairs of 2007, 09 and 11 rather than the one-sided aberration of two years ago. Led brilliantly by Whitworth they came up just 1½ points short of their target but ultimately for Lister and the North this was a triumph of understated captaincy.

The St Mellion venue had also taken the Ryder Cup Challenge to another level with its superb courses and rooms overlooking the spectacular 18th green, scene of an improbable impromptu chipping competition at 3 am on Sunday morning. A fitting end to another fabulous weekend of keen competition amongst great friends.
