In the morning Fourballs, over the Links course, the North got off to a flyer, despite Forster’s absence from the first tee due to an unscheduled visit to the bushes. He recovered to post a 2 up victory, with partner Callaghan, over Batch & Moyle.

Although Cole & Hewson chalked the first point to the South with a 5&4 win over Hooley & Marcus, Mountain & Wilkinson beat Lake & Hordern (3&2), whilst in the game of the morning Hardwick & Horner scraped home 1 up against Whorlow & Bell, to leave the North 1-3 up at the end of the morning’s play.

There was little time for rest, in spite of the intense heat, as the players moved to the Lakes course for the afternoon Foursomes. Again the North dominated from the off, and at a late stage were still up in all four games, but things began to turn round for the South when Moyle & Hordern fought back [insert ‘heroically’ – Ed.] from 5 down with 8 to play, and from dormie 3, to gain an improbable half against Forster & Hooley.

The in-form pairing of Hardwick & Wilkinson thumped Hewson & Cole 5&4 but both Lake & Batch and Whorlow & Bell recorded 2&1 victories to leave the score 3½-4½, and the South back in the hunt at sundown.
