North Win Another Nerve Shredder

Presentation of the winning team

In another remarkably close and exciting match the northern boys once again prevailed to take the 2011 match by 9½ to 6½ and retain the Cup. With an amazing five of the eight singles matches being decided on the 18th, and none before the 16th, it was a much closer affair than might have been predicted after day 1 when the score was 6-2 to the eventual winners. But the holders – particularly captain Darren Mountain and debutant Adie Clough who both won holes 17 and 18 to take their matches – showed their nerve and winning experience to record a famous victory.

Plaudits to the South team for again putting up a tremendous fight and especially to captain Simon Cole, to Ben Moyle and to newcomer Ian Grundy, all of whom secured two points overall. Special mention also for the returning Dave Hubbard – narrowly missing out alongside Bell in the foursomes Friday afternoon, he then staged a remarkable comeback Saturday from 5 down in his Singles match but could only prolong it until 17th.

North were naturally delighted with the win and at presentations later on, to rousing cheers, player of the tournament award went jointly to Graham Copley and Adie Clough both of whom secured maximum points. South will lick their wounds and prepare for 2013 under the captaincy of Mark Wallis, with Gavin Whitworth as his assistant. Jimmy Curley meanwhile will be delighted to host up north in two years time.
