South came away with a lot of credit though &#8211; it was a renewal\u00a0to rank alongside those close and tense affairs of 2007, 09 and 11 rather than the one-sided aberration of two years ago. Led brilliantly\u00a0by Whitworth they\u00a0came\u00a0<!--more-->up\u00a0just 1\u00bd points short of their target but ultimately\u00a0for Lister and the North this was a triumph of understated captaincy.<\/p>\n<p>The St Mellion venue had also taken the Ryder Cup Challenge to another level with its superb courses and rooms overlooking the spectacular 18th green, scene of an improbable impromptu chipping competition at 3 am on Sunday morning.
